The Great Void
"Shift Age

If you're one of the few not plagued by thoughts of mortality and burdened by self-reflection, consider yourself lucky. If you're a brooder, however, then Shift Age, by NYC dark electro-rock project The Great Void, might be the record for you. It bears all the outwards signs of happy pop music, though the longer you listen, the more surreal it gets. Especially vivid is “Medicine Ball,” whose plunky synths and new-wave vocals divert bleakly-rendered lines like, “I know we'd have fun/But you're much too young.” By “Shift Age (Part 2),” it's clear the gloss is just a cover for deconstructing nostalgia itself. “Out with the days of the old ways” sings leader Josh Ascalon before a barrage of high-pitched squeals surge towards an apocalyptic finale. Or maybe that's just the hardware inside his keyboard threatening to fry out? - Brian Chidester

Weekend Warrior, February 15 - 17

Weekend Warrior, February 15 - 17

Back at it again with their brand of fuzz-driven sludge-punk, Pissed Jeans continue with their common thread of self-depreciation that has placed them somewhat on the more cynical end of the spectrum than their Sub Pop counterparts the Postal Service. Sure, they’ve grown up a bit since 2009’s King of Jeans, but the spirit of the disenfranchised can still be heard in frontman Matt Korvette’s bellowing howls. Does maturation mean they’ve gone soft? No. Not in the least. The new album Honeys is proof that maturity isn’t always industry code for a leveling of intensity. Accompanying the familiarity of lamenting screams, the thunderous sound battle of bass versus guitar versus drums remains in tandem. Be sure that you’re a part of the fanfare for the King’s return tonight to celebrate their new release at Underground Arts with support from decibel-pushing brethrens Leather and Lantern.
