What exactly do BIRDS mean when they title their album Everything All At Once? It could be considered a one-size-fits-all genre tag, a wide net to summarize all their influences without using the nondescript term “indie”. However, we'd rather think of it as a means of describing what they offer on each song; there’s no token emotional song or designated hit single. Instead, the band opt to craft every song with psychedelic breeziness that merges with subtle earnestness in a way that these songs could fit either a summer or winter playlist without feeling out of place. BIRDS’ brand of weirdo psych-pop is reminiscent of what the Elephant 6 collective were doing in the 90’s, but their focus on more subdued songwriting allow for each song to expand in meaning and depth in a naturalistic and enthralling way. While the NYC scene seems to be crawling with psych bands, local rockers Birds tackle the genre in a way that sets them apart from the pack. Though the band is certainly taking cues from music of the past, their angular and distorted sliding guitars and bizarre vocal melodies suggest that they're digging through vinyl crates that have not been thoroughly picked through yet. With such a unique sound, we wanted to ask the band a bit about the driving forces surrounding it, and members Jess and Duane were nice enough to dig into to the stories surrounding their pedals for us. - Olivia Sisinni

With the recent roll out of lead single "Get Away" (streaming below), Brooklyn psych-rockers BIRDS prepare to release their debut album “Everything All At Once” on 8/18 through Greenway Records. Emerging from a two-chord progression similar to Iggy & The Stooges “Search & Destroy,” the single adds bass counter-melody and rising background vocals, positioning the track closer to a pop song. “I’ve been awake all morning, watching the light pour in. I keep away from stealing – I do my own healing,” describe the self-reflective lyrics. Catchy melodic lines unfold via speedy guitar lines woven in and around emphatic vocals. “I get away so easy” becomes the ultimate key line towards the end of a power-packed two and a half minute song. With a name bound to trigger confusion (not only with a similarly named bands from the '60s... check out this Spotify profile!), Brooklyn's Birds channel a sound more than slightly influenced by the imaginative '90s psych rock of The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev, bands that for truly incomprehensible reasons have been left behind in the recent '90s rock revival (for the unaware, at the time The Flaming Lips were a different band than they are now). The crooked distorted sliding guitars and bizarre vocal melodies of tracks like Fade (streaming) or Behind You immediately brought smiles to our faces, sending us on a mental journey back to our vynil filled early twenties. If it's true that all new music is a re-elaboration of music of the past (and true it is) Birds can enjoy the advantage of a sound influenced by great records not many other current emerging bands seem fond of. And that's one reason why we are so excited about them. Check them out live at Union Pool on October 9th.
