The Districts

The Districts Benefit for Standing Rock Release Available for Streaming & Purchase

Protesters have been gathering for months near Standing Rock Sioux reservation to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline, which poses a threat to water resources and sacred Native American sites. With state officials ordering activists to vacate the area and an incoming President financially invested in the 3.8 billion dollar project, the thousands camped in the snow and freezing temperatures certainly could use any help possible battling the odds and greed of Corporate America. The Districts recently posted a couple of demos ("One to Another" & "Alice"), which you can stream and purchase below, with all proceeds going to the Standing Rock Medic & Healer Council. Please donate.

Weekend Warrior, November 25 - 27

Thanksgiving is a time for homecoming and festivities. And that's exactly what The Districts have in mind when they return to Philly for a little break from their fall tour. The hometown love is strong for the Lititz, PA transplants, so just one show might not be enough for their friends and fans this holiday weekend. Instead, they've setup a Trifecta of kick-ass, sold-out shows, with the help of some talented friends, that will be beginning this evening at Johnny Brenda’s. Tonight, the introspective beauty of Kississippi will be tugging at the heartstrings, after a dramatic, oddly spooky performance from Baltimore’s Albert Bagman. On Saturday, you’ll find The Districts joined by buzzworthy Philly newcomers Tangiers and The Dove & The Wolf. And finally, the Fat Possum artists will be hosting a very rare, all-ages show at JB’s on Sunday that also features alt-rockers Mumblr, who will be happily returning home from their own big tour. Johnny Brenda's, 1201. N Frankford Ave., 9pm (7pm - Sunday), SOLD OUT, 21+ (All Ages - Sunday) (Photo by Sarah Rudderow) - Bill McThrill

New Track: "Nightswimming" (R.E.M. Cover) - Rob Grote (The Districts)

Before leaving for tour, The District's Rob Grote was asked to record a tune for Amazon's Songs of Summer playlist. He chose to cover "Nightswimming" by R.E.M., off their 1992 LP Automatic for the People. There is certainly a nocturnal feel to this lo-fi version, transporting you into simply a music lover's bedroom in the middle of the night, where he is alone with his toys and one of his favorite songs. You can stream the new track HERE.

Beyond The Bars Fundraiser w/The Districts, Hop Along's Frances Quinlan & More at WCL April 17

World Cafe Live is hosting a fundraiser for Beyond The Bars, featuring rising local artists such as The Districts and Hop Along’s Frances Quinlan. All ticket sales will benefit the Beyond The Bars program, which provides musical education and instruments for incarcerated youth in Greater Philadelphia. The program seeks to empower these disadvantaged young men and women by equipping them with an outlet for creative expression and a sense of agency while they grapple with the frequently disorienting and dissociative bureaucracy of the criminal justice system. In support of this righteous cause, The Districts will take to the stage on Sunday evening with their universally adored, weary-plodding folk-pop/rock. Frances Quinlan will jolt you awake with her electric and hugely dynamic voice. Also pitching in for the cause will be Lushlife (DJ Set), Queen of Jeans, Ben Arnold, Milton, and The Bul Bey. World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St, 4pm, $20, All Ages. - Bryce Woodcock

Weekend Warrior, November 6 - 8

There is a certain charm to watching a local band rise through the music industry and claim their visibility in a more macro cultural lens. Living in Philadelphia, we have been lucky to get to enjoy this process again and again the past few years. One of the more recent Philly exports and former Deli Philly Artist of the Year is The Districts. The quartet makes accessible indie rock of the highest quality, infused with blues, Americana and folk elements, punctuated by lyrics dripping with emotional resonance. The Districts have both an instrumental and lyrical maturity, resembling a more composed, introspective Twin Peaks. The former Lititz, PA natives are headlining the E Factory this evening, and the sweet bill will be rounded out by Lady Lamb, a rocker version of Fiona Apple with haunting vocalization, and local indie-rock favorites, Purples.
