New Track: "Undertow" - DRGN King

With their new album Baltimore Crush due out on October 28 via Bar None Records, DRGN King just premiered the single “Undertow” over at Pancakes and Whiskey. The steady thudding basslines and casual vocals provide a calming atmosphere before shifting into higher gear, allowing the instruments and vocals to open up. The song finishes in a decidedly different place from where it started - much like the latest incarnation of the DRGN King project.

The Lawsuits EP Release Show w/DRGN KING & Tutlie at JB's Sept 26

A celebratory atmosphere fills Johnny Brenda’s this evening as a trio of local acts is slated on the bill, headlined by The Lawsuits, whom just released their new EP Tumbled earlier this week. The album builds on the group’s foundation of genre interplay, touching on aspects of folk/Americana, R&B, and rock and creating a polished sound that consistently draws listeners with its tight fluid shifts. Speaking of new records, DRGN King is due to release their latest Baltimore Crush on October 28 via Bar None Records. In the midst of a fall tour, DRGN King unleashes an eclectic upbeat tone, with psych accents and Dominic Angelella’s commanding front-of-the-pack lead vocals. The ever-evolving lineup of chamber/baroque-pop outfit, Tutlie, opens the show, developing a strong hold through delicate yet authoritatively layered vocal harmonies, elevated through a wide range of environment shaping instrumentation, creating a thoughtful sonic setting. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ - Michael Colavita

Free Download: "Solo Harp" - DRGN King

DRGN King just posted the first release since their debut LP Paragraph Nights. The single, "Solo Harp," "was written somewhere in between the hours of 3 and 6 am and fleshed out at Kawari Sound," and is labeled "space pop" on their Soundcloud page, which we do agree, makes perfect sense. After all, aren't we all a bit spacey at that time of the night? You can stream and download the track for free below.

DRGN King Returns to Philly at JB’s Feb. 28

DRGN King is back in Philly after a tour of the northern middle states. Although the band hasn’t released anything new since its debut LP, Paragraph Nights, the group’s frontman, Dominic Angelella, recently did a stripped-down cover of The Dead Milkmen’s classic, “Punk Rock Girl”, for Root Down in The Shadow’s Cover Club. Hopefully he’ll unleash a more raucous rendition tonight with a full band at Johnny Brenda’s. They’ll be sharing a bill this evening with New York City’s Porches, a band that specializes in dark, slowed-down rock with an undercurrent of world beats; however, their music contains a subtle light, hopeful lilt that keeps its songs from weighing to heavy on a listener’s soul. Also on the night’s roster is another Philly act, Mumblr, playing garage-noise with plenty of fuzz. So shake off the icicles, and let the music warm you up. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ - Shaylin O’Connell
