gobbinjr

gobbinjr's psychosocial drama takes stage at Mercury on 12.06

gobbinjr is the brainchild of Wisconsin native Emma Witmer, whose rawness and minimalism in 2016 EP vom night might bring to mind a more synthpop version of Frankie Cosmos. Atop self-produced tracks filled with ethereal synths floating over slow-pulsing drum machines, and bursting with a wide variety of influences, lay Witmer’s intensely antisocial lyrics (the irony being that the songwriting itself has become the vehicle for sociability). They paint a picture of a helplessly shy writer with the song as her one authentically viable communication outlet. Lines like “I feel creepy all the time / ‘cause I like everybody more than they like me” and “maybe we all end up in space / undeserving of this friendly place” serve as social critique cloaked in the aesthetic of teenage diary entries. In this light, vom night proves to masterfully balance the head and the heart, becoming a provocative witness of the times with a simple, pop-centered approach.

You can catch their next show on Wednesday, December 6th at Mercury Lounge. - Andrew Strader

gobbinjr plays Brooklyn Bazaar 05.31 with Told Slant, Fits and Crosslegged

gobbinjr, the moniker of Brooklyn's Emma Witner, is playing alongside Told Slant, Fits and Crosslegged at a We Make Noise benefit at Brooklyn Bazaar on May 31st. Fans of Porches and Frankie Cosmos will enjoy Witner's unique retro instrumentation. Drum machines and swelling keys compliment disarming lyrics such as: "I'm a vaccum-sealed freezer dinner rotting in the box," and "No one wants to love someone who's never been loved before." Check out the video for "vom nite" below. - Ethan Ames

gobbinjr releases 'Vom Night' EP + tours the east coast

gobbinjr is the stage name of songwriter/producer Emma Witmer, a Wisconsian who ended up becoming a Brookyinite via NYU - and a big THANK YOU NYU, we can now officially blame you for Trump's election! Emma plays gentle music, and although she likes to work solo, she enjoys wearing the hats of each (non existing) band member - each one suit her! Her debut album 'Vom Might' is a soft, drum machine propelled mellow pop record, full of intimate and honest lyrics conveyed through delicate melodies and an appropriately simple but never banal production. Fans of Frankie Cosmos will find in gobbinjr's music the same youthful attitude and melancholic sincerity, which seems to communicate - on a subliminal level - the awareness that youth ends too soon and it's too beautiful to be lived without dwelling in philospy, poetry and art.

We added this song to The Deli's playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists - check it out!
