Goon releases new single "Check Engine Light," debut LP out 7/19

There's a weary quality to Goon frontman Kenny Becker's optimistic sentiment. "Alright/Okay/I'm walking on sunshine all the time," Becker sings on "Check Engine Light," subsumed by the anxiety that consumes his thoughts. His words may be sincere, but his dry tone says otherwise. And just like that indicator lamp that nags one to no end, it's a feeling that's better not to ignore—before it gets any worse.

Goon's fourth single off their full-length debut, Heaven is Humming, continues their solid streak of hook-driven scuzz rock—a sound they've been refining since the release of 2016's Dusk of Pink -EP. Check out the band's forthcoming headline release show at Echoplex on July 18. It's out July 19 via Partisan Records. - Juan Edgardo Rodríguez

Goon explores dark territory with new track “Cammie at Night”

Setting the scene through a slow and longing lull of cloudy chords, Goon builds upon this somber tone into a sensory soundscape with their latest track, “Cammie at Night.” The track’s alternate grunge appeal takes center stage, alongside crunchy distortions and lo-fi vocals processed through a misty sense of view. Despite the track’s initial slow start, scuzzy guitar lines explode midway into an effortless sonic wave.

With a heavy dosage of emotions weighing musically, front man Kenny Becker explains that the track “explores the sensitive subject of sexuality repressed by religion and the lingering affect it has on adolescents and their sexual relationships and developing sexual identity.” Becker successfully translates the track’s purpose by holding the alternative rock flare with a skilled balanced. “Cammie at Night” may carry a heavy demeanor at times, but is brought into a fresh light with its lightweight trance, hidden among the driving bass lines.

Goon announce debut EP Dusk of Punk, play the Echo on 8/11

It seems as if LA. alt-rockers Goon take from two stylistic genres on their latest track "Dizzy" - either they crunch their guitars like their grunge forebearers, or they play their melodic hooks with an unpolished quality that mimics the garage stomp of the last decade. But then you listen closely and you notice they compliment those melodies with pop harmonies. It becomes quite clear how Goon are not concerned with replicating a sound that already exists, more so seeking some way to make it new. One first impression (albeit, a very good one!) is not enough to make a clear assessment of where the band is headed, but to think they've already written such a tuneful song that connects on more than one level proves that they are onto something special.

"Dizzy" is the first track off of Goon's debul EP Dusk of Punk, which will be self-released on September 16. The band is also slated to play a local show opening for Lucy Dacus at the Echo tomorrow, August 11. - Juan Rodríguez
