Hop Along

Weekend Warrior, October 7 - 9

This Saturday, Philadelphia’s Electric Factory will be hosting the fourth and final installment in Pabst Blue Ribbon’s roving national showcase of musical talent called Project Pabst. This year’s host-cities have been Denver, Portland (Oregon), and Atlanta. Philly’s installment in particular is dubbed the CityWide Fest, sporting a no-nonsense lineup that includes local favorites Hop Along and Beach Slang, along with fellow national touring acts such as Downtown Boys, Animal Collective, Mac DeMarco and Guided by Voices. The event features some aptly branded outdoor attractions housed in tents such as the PBRcade (full gaming arcade), VANdalism (tag up a van that gets donated to charity), and Pabst Wax (mobile music recording, pressing live recordings to vinyl on the spot). The music kicks off at 1pm and runs late into the night, if you’re counting the after-party featuring performances by Son Little and Vulfpeck. Beyond the scope of the day’s events, Pabst runs the PBR Music Society, which is a program for artists that are actively seeking financial support. Participants are asked to produce a video submission, and each month an artist is selected to receive support. For more information on PBR’s efforts and ticket details, you can head HEREElectric Factory, 421 N. 7th St, 1pm, $40 (Full Day)/$19.50 (After-party)/$55 (combo), 21+ - Josh Kelly

Happy 10th Anniversary Week, Johnny Brenda’s!!!

For those who’ve been lucky enough to live through the renaissance that Philly’s music scene has been experiencing for the last decade or so, we’d like to remind you of a time when the next big thing in music was not likely going to be discovered in your favorite local DIY space. With the exception of R5 Productions, who was only consistently booking the First Unitarian Church at the time and just starting to gain a great reputation nationally in the indie music scene, many of the music venues were known more for ripping off artists than helping to nurture the music community. However, once Johnny Brenda’s renovated its second floor into a concert space, it was a total game changer - forever raising the bar in Philly. (Thank you!) We finally had a world-class music venue that actually cared about the artists’ and concertgoers’ experience. (What local musician out there didn’t appreciate the complimentary Greek plate in the backstage when he or she first performed there?) Johnny Brenda’s became a cornerstone for the arts & culture community in Fishtown and throughout Philadelphia.

This week marks the beloved establishment’s 10th Anniversary as a music venue, and they’ll be celebrating it with some kick-ass events that start this evening with the soulful, powerful ache of Hop Along frontwoman Frances Quinlan, the polished indie-pop of Hurry, and the “heavenly blues” of The Goodbye Party. You also surely don’t want to miss Tuesday night’s psych explorations with Bardo Pond, Birds of Maya, and Chris Forsyth. The rest of the week’s festivities will also include evenings with Rocky Votolato, The Album Leaf, IGNITE Philly, and much more. Cheers to all the good folks at JB’s! - Q.D. Tran

Weekend Warrior, June 3 - 5

Tonight at Union Transfer will be Connor Barwin’s third annual MTWB Benefit Concert. The show, which has hosted buzz bands like Mac Demarco and Kurt Vile in the past, has one of its strongest line-ups this year, which includes Philly’s own Hop Along and Waxahatchee. Barwin, who recently signed a new six-year deal with the Eagles, has been a presence both in the local music and parks & recreations scenes since coming to Philly. He befriended R5 Productions’ Sean Agnew, and has cultivated a super positive event. Each year, Barwin has upped his game for the concert, and this year is no exception. There will also be special guest performers this evening (like Blue Note artist Ryan Anthony Massaro ;-). Every dollar that is raised at the show - both from tickets and bar sales - will be matched by MTWB and donated to a new project in Philadelphia. You can get cheap tix or ball-out for an opportunity to drink and schmooze with some Eagles, but remember it’s all for a great cause. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 7:30pm, $5 - $300, All Ages - Adam G.

Beyond The Bars Fundraiser w/The Districts, Hop Along's Frances Quinlan & More at WCL April 17

World Cafe Live is hosting a fundraiser for Beyond The Bars, featuring rising local artists such as The Districts and Hop Along’s Frances Quinlan. All ticket sales will benefit the Beyond The Bars program, which provides musical education and instruments for incarcerated youth in Greater Philadelphia. The program seeks to empower these disadvantaged young men and women by equipping them with an outlet for creative expression and a sense of agency while they grapple with the frequently disorienting and dissociative bureaucracy of the criminal justice system. In support of this righteous cause, The Districts will take to the stage on Sunday evening with their universally adored, weary-plodding folk-pop/rock. Frances Quinlan will jolt you awake with her electric and hugely dynamic voice. Also pitching in for the cause will be Lushlife (DJ Set), Queen of Jeans, Ben Arnold, Milton, and The Bul Bey. World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St, 4pm, $20, All Ages. - Bryce Woodcock

Hop Along & Dr. Dog Return Home at The Fillmore March 17

Touring compatriots, Hop Along and Dr. Dog, return home tonight for the evening to perform at The Fillmore. The Psychedelic Swamp continues with Dr. Dog’s psych-pop rock trek, lacing infectious harmonies with reinforced surf-textured tunes to ease you into an undeniable groove. This crew peppers its songs with elements of oddity, in an accessible rejoicing art-pop manner. Further fueling the home cooking for the evening, the quartet of Hop Along balance memorable storytelling with raw yet refined instrumentation that sinks into the cut, breaking loose when the moment is just right ,as the gut-shorn ferocity of Frances Quinlan’s vocals catapult forward. They’re constantly on the move, so let'ss welcome them home. The Fillmore Philadelphia, 1000 Frankford Ave., $32, All Ages (Hop Along Photo by Ryan Muir) - Michael Colavita
