New Beard celebrates release of ' My People are Around' EP at Mercury this Saturday (08.02)

Self-described “weird rock” band New Beard will be kicking off the release of their new EP “My People Are Around” with a release show at Mercury Lounge this Saturday, August 2nd. Though the record is coming in at six tracks shorter than the band’s first full-length “New Beard City,” don’t be deceived by its brevity — it is tightly packed with strange vocal inflections, grungy power chords, and irony-stricken lyrics in all of the right places. While some tracks on the album verge on compositional chaos, others play out with the soft, crooning exterior of a folk song — much like the opening track, “The Weight of a Tiny Being” a quirky love song that reveals the probable origins of the band's name: “You have changed me for the better/I grew out my facial hair for you.” Check out the video of title track My People are Around. - Jillian Dooley

Deli CMJ Indie Pop/Rock Stage at Spike Hill with Eytan & The Embassy, Mother Feather, Motive, The Last Royals + more

DETAILS ABOUT THIS SHOW & STREAMING COMPILATION OF ALL FEATURED BANDS HERE

For Wednesday's Deli CMJ showcase at Spike Hill, expect a sweet crescendo from the sprightliest to the raunchiest of our pop/rock picks. Headlining the first half of the evening, featuring five of the city's upcoming Indie Pop artists, we're offering you the eccentricities of Eytan & The Embassy and the passionate ballads of duo The Last Royals, whose debut album is on the way. These two will be joined by Flying Points, a new record on the way, who will be opening show, followed by Fast Years, whose latest music video you should definitely be checking out if you haven't already, and the only solo artist of the lot, Ace Reporter.

Subtle transition into the second part of the night, Motive will be the first headliner of our Alt Rock stage, opening the dance with their delectable indie rock before co-headlining cock-rock outfit Mother Feather comes to take over with its flamboyant tease of an act, heating the crowds up for the last two bands of the evening. Next up will be self-dubbed 'weird rock' troubadours New Beard, and to conclude the night, you'll be entertained by the contemporary intepretations of back-to-basics rock&roll formulas served up by Raccoon Fighter. - In the pictures: Eytan & the Embassy and Mother Feather.

Weekly Feature: New Beard plays Union Hall on 08.18

So, New Beard is not just a clever name, since the band is indeed dominated by facial hair. The Brooklyn-based five-piece, consisting of Tony Waldman, Ben Wigler, Yazan, Maria Eisen, and “Tuba” Joe Exley (not just a clever alias either), adding a creative take on the low end, is not just your average rock band. The title track of their new album "New Beard City" combines feel-good, jazzy melodies and bouncing rhythms, while “I Walk the Streets” features intricate percussion and moments of calypso beats, haunting distortion, and unexpected modulations, which contrasts with somber, low-key, tuba-centric, “Terran Holiday.” New Beard’s self-proclaimed “weird rock” genre is infectiously entertaining and builds the anticipation of their upcoming show at Unin Hall on August 18. - Read Meijin Bruttomesso's interview with the band here.

New Beard announces full length + plays Bowery Electric on May 5

New Beard released a substantial debut EP ("Moment of Peace") late in 2011, and in June is set to release an album full of the kind of dreamlike touches and dramatic flourishes at home with the Brooklyn-based artist leading this project, Ben Wigler. Not content with repeating itself, the band has stripped bare many of the dense sounds heard on the EP and has gone for a clean and lush atmospheric. The quartet showcases an enormous bag of tricks, and the orchestration has expanded to flutes, strings, tuba and the many manner of ways that express the kind of dreamy sadness Ben Wigler has made his own. To promote the upcoming release, New Beard is premiering this free Mp3 of the song "Doom"(Featuring Gustav Ejstes of Dungen), which you can download below. Don't miss their show at Bowery Electric on May 5. - Mike Levine
