Steel Phantoms

Steel Phantoms Win Best of NYC 2013 Indie Rock Open Submission Contest

Steel Phantoms have been on my radar ever since I heard the first chord of Curtain Call last year and was immediately transported to The Jam's 'That's Entertainment.' The duo Aaron Harris, previously of Montreal's Islands and Jesse Newkirk IV pump out scrambling songs that go from broody to brash in seconds. On 'Sunflowers' vocals take a delicate gossamer turn (the word 'haunts' sounds haunting), and even the drums glisten, quivering and glittering into a beat driven crescendo. 'Matt Le Blanc' hints at their grungier side, whilst 'Friend to Friend' is more smooth garage, sometimes with a nod to The Smiths via Sonic Youth. 'Overflow' (streaming) its layers of love and enchantment over melodic and heightened chord sequences will be the gentle sway and soar tune on Tuesday 18th Feb when they headline a superb line up of Coastgaard, Vinyl Thief, and Sharkmuffin at Pianos. Francesca Baker

Steel Phantom won the Open Submission contest tied to our Best of NYC 2013 Poll for Emerging Artists, full results for that category are here

Steel Phantoms release EP + video

Brooklyn's guitar/drum duo Steel Phantoms marries an indie rock sound with a songwriting elegance often foreign to the genre. Their single "Curtain Call" (video streaming below) features a reversed (and a little anti-climatic) chorus-verse structure, with a melody that could have come out of a Paul Simon song, but filled with distortion and unpredictable breaks. The band will be releasing a self titled EP on July 16.

Steel Phantoms announces EP + plays Cameo on May 31

The Brooklyn based Indie duo that is now Steel Phantoms (the band lately went through some line up changes) has just announced that they are set to self-release a new 7-track EP on July 16th. Former Islands drummer Aaron Harris pairs with Jessie Newkirk to bring you a special sect of Post-punk/Indie Rock that plays back like a catchy flood of dissonant guitar riffs, pleasant vocals and an ironically balanced composure. Listen/download the song “Curtain Call” (not an Eminem cover) from their upcoming EP below. Check them out at Muchmores on the 18th and Cameo Gallery on the 31st. - Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

We added this song to The Deli's playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists - check it out!
