Night Market and ART/GAGE w/Strand of Oaks, Norwegian Arms, Night Panther & Circadian Rhythms at 9th & South Sts. Aug 15

South Street comes alive tonight with food, art, music, culture, and more as it pays host to both Night Market and ART/GAGE. The Food Trust will have its usual barrage of nearly 80 food trucks descending upon the iconic strip for what is guaranteed to be the largest edition of this culinary event yet. Meanwhile, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens and a number of other art collectives and galleries will provide a plentiful showcase of local artists during ART/GAGE. But of course, both events converging upon the same area wouldn’t be complete without a carnival of circus performers and local musicians to provide some enlightening entertainment. The 9th Street stage starts off strong with the vibrant, throwback indie pop tunes of Circadian Rhythms, and is followed up by the soulful, sex pop vibrations of Drink Up Buttercup/White Birds alums Night Panther. Add in the impassioned weirdo-folk of Norwegian Arms and a headlining set from buzz-worthy folk maestro Strand of Oaks, and you have an evening of music that is not to be missed - seriously! Strand of Oaks Opening for Phosphorescent at JB’s March 25

Strand of Oaks, a.k.a. Tim Showalter, has been quite a road warrior ever since the release of his much-beloved 2010 album Pope Killdragon. He’s currently on tour promoting his latest album Dark Shores with Phosphorescent, who is also sharing material from his critically acclaimed new record Muchacho. Tonight they’ll be rolling into Johnny Brenda’s for a sold-out show that will surely have their fans eating up the new tunes. (BTW: Strand of Oaks also just released an EP with earlier versions of tracks from Dark Shores, which I actually enjoy more with its use of vintage synthesizers. It sounds like what I was originally expecting from the LP, based on his interviews before the album dropped. You can decide for yourself below.) Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $13 - $15 (Sold Out), 21+ - Q.D. Tran

Weekend Warrior, December 14 - 16

Strand of Oaks has had a helluva 2012, which saw him release another beautiful album in Dark Shores and found him reaching out to the masses on tours with the likes of Bowerbirds, Yellow Ostrich, and The Tallest Man on Earth. Showalter is all set to wrap up his successful year with his first headlining show at Johnny Brenda’s this Saturday, and it will likely be one of the last chances to see him play a hometown show before he heads for a tour of Sweden and Norway with Tallest Man on Earth in 2013. Little Big League will have plenty to celebrate when they open the show since they recently finished up work on their upcoming debut LP that should see the light of day at the beginning of next year. Buried Beds are another band who had a great year and will have some big things in store for the new year, so when they take the stage you might just get a preview of what is to come. It’s going to be a righteous locals only evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford St., 9pm, $10, 21+ - Bill McThrill

Philly’s epic folk teller Strand of Oaks a.k.a. Tim Showalter with Pattern Is Movement drummer Chris Ward in tow has been roaming the American countryside and wowing crowds (I'm sure) on a highly-successful tour with Sweden’s The Tallest Man On Earth. Showalter will be spinning his captivating tales for both old and young today at Philly Folk Fest representin’ for a new breed of folksters on the rise who are ready to add to the genre’s rich heritage. It’s going to be chill, but damn sure beautiful! Old Pool Farm, Upper Salford Township, 12:30pm, Various Prices, All Ages - H.M. Kauffman
