The 2012 Deli's CMJ festivities will be kicking off on Tuesday, October 16th at The Delancey, with an extensive showcase of some of the city's best rootsy acts. This year, we've booked fourteen artists, most of them local, who'll be giving us a good taste of folk music beyond the run-of-the-mill, split between both floors of the Lower East Side venue. 

Headlining the main floor we'll have the magnetic concoctions of dream-roots duo Blonds and rootsy-pop ensemble Laura Stevenson & The Cans (pictured), amidst a farandole in which everyone should find a flavour that suits them - check out Town Hall, Swear & Shake, and The Reverend John Delore, who will be releasing a new album that night.

Upstairs, for a free (!) show, you'll find bluegrass trio JP & The Gilberts, energetic singer folky duo XNY, and the enchanting recent additions to the NYC scene Plume Giant (pictured) - who've been getting some well-deserved attention since the release of their debut album 'Callithump' - on a night filled with talent in which everyone, even those country detractors out there, should find a reason to cheer. In between dorm life and mid-term exams, NYU trio Town Hall released their full-length debut “Roots and Bells” this spring. Though maybe not your typical college undergrads, the Brooklyn trio met as students at the Clive Davis Institute of Recording Music in 2010 and have been jamming together ever since.  With the poppy, upbeat vocals of Stefan Weiner and Phoebe Ryan, the band charges through “Roots and Bells” with songs about mischief and longing that mix playful humor with a diverse set of stirring folk melodies. Joined by Plume Giant and The Due Diligence, they'll be starting off their fall season on September 29th at Shea Stadium. Read Devon Antonetti's interview with the band here. 

Double release on Sunday April 15 at The Studio at Webster Hall for two promising folky NYC bands, Flearoy and Town Hall.

Town Hall (top picture) describe themselves as an "adventurous indie pop band", although their music betrays a strong folk component, with frequent jazzy tinges. In the past few months they released a weekly, DIY cover video of songs like "Always On Time" by Ashanti & Ja Rule and "The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World. This past January, they released their EP "Sticky Notes & Paper Scraps" and recently released their first official music video, "Good Boy".

Flearoy's Americana carries influences ranging from Booker T & the MG's to the Beatles to Destiny's Child (whom they recently covered in a tribute set in December). The band has earned an always welcome reputation for their raucous and fun live shows, but can also be moving in an intimate kind of way, since they master the art of the country ballad.
