Von Sell

Von Sell premieres “Digital Sleep,” a swirling, electronic collage

Like the mesmerizing blur of the world passing by as seen through a car window, Von Sell’s newest single “Digital Sleep” swirls with detail faster than we can understand. In a flurry of voices, delayed and warped into the dominant texture of the track, “Digital Sleep” urges us towards attention while never offering a chance to focus. Von Sell says, in an interview with Atwood Magazine: “I think we’re all constantly struggling to see what’s right in front of us. Being glued to your phone certainly doesn’t help but it’s probably the human condition to begin with.”

The track plays true to the idea of short-sightedness but also acknowledges its own investment in the beauty of so much sensory content, constantly veering in new directions, collaging together seemingly unlinked sections. The effect, particularly Von Sell’s production of his vocals into an ethereal backing, is dazzling. Though no concrete date has been released, the single will be part of an upcoming Digital Sleep EP, out this summer. Listen to the track below. – Cameron Carr

Von Sell returns with groovy alt-pop on “Hell No”

After a year spent battling vocal chord issues, Brooklyn artist Von Sell has returned with the R&B inflected electro-pop single “Hell No,” a hard-grooving debut for NYU’s Village Records. David Von Sell, the Hamburg, Germany native behind the project, sings with a soft and sly tone that contrasts the on-and-off pump of a dense electronica arrangement. The production shines on “Hell No,” so sleek it’s almost slippery with a thick snare-kick beat anchoring the rhythm down. It’s a marked improvement to his promising 2016 debut self-titled EP and an enticing preview of what we could expect from a new EP currently in progress by Von Sell. – Cameron Carr

Electro-pop artist Von Sell revisits debut single "Ivan"

When Von Sell released "Ivan" back in 2015 at the request of some friends, the electro-pop artist developed a following seemingly out of nowhere. A few releases later and the Brooklyn-based artist decided to return to his debut single, giving it the finishing treatment that could only come from 2 years of experience and reflection. With cascading synthy layers, a strong pop sensibility and driving, gritty basslines, "Ivan (Revisted)" is a gem of a pop hit, and our favorite new earworm. Von Sell releases new track "I Insist" + plays Rockwood on 06.07

Brooklyn via Berlin electronic artist Von Sell appeared on the scene last year with uber-catchy synth pop single "Ivan." With his recent second release, a synth-soul ballad entitled "I Insist" (streaming below), the young man showcases a multifaceted talent through his ability to create two very different but similarly strong electro pop singles. His pop-soul inclinations are compensated by arrangements often flirting with unexpected, at times even quirky textural elements, like the flutes towards the end of "Ivan" or the warbly synths in "I Insists." You can catch Von Sell live on June 7th at Rockwood Music Hall. - Amanda McCall

TEEN, Chaos Chaos, Von Sell and Gold Child play Audiofemme Anniversay bash tonight (04.19)

A NYC based music blog that fosters music journalism by female music writers, Audiofemme tonight is hosting an anniversary bash at Greenpoint's Good Room with lots of talented, mostly female fronted artists. We blogged about psych pop quartet TEEN and indie pop sister duo Chaos Chaos more than once in this blog - check out those links to refresh your ears. Gold Child (pictured) will also perform on the bill; the trio offers tasteful and relaxed Americana with dreamy overtones and is led by the confident alto of Emily Fehler. On the bill also Von Sell, the solo project of David Von Sell, who released two Hypem-blessed singles that successfully blend experimental textures and soul-pop melodies with jazzy tinges. Check out his latest single 'I Insist' streaming below, and last year's debut 'Ivan,' here - we added the latter to The Deli's playlist of Best electronic songs by emerging NYC artists. On the bill also indie rock quartet Marigolds, who evoke Robyn Hitchcock's legendary early band, the Soft Boys.

We added this Gold Child song to The Deli's playlist of Best rootsy songs by emerging NYC artists - check it out!
