Sam Cohen of Yellowbirds releases solo album "Cool It"

We've always been fans of Sam Cohen's band Yellowbirds, which celebrated their farewell show in November 2014, so it's great to hear that the NYC composer and producer is coming out with a solo album entitled "Cool It," scheduled for a late April release. Single "Let the Mountain Come to You" (streaming) features heavy '70s influences and Sam's signature vocals.

We added this song to The Deli's playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists - check it out!

Yellowbirds releases new album + lands residency at Rockwood

We've been fans of Yellowbirds' imaginative and dreamy take on Roy Orbison's crooning songs for awhile (the band's debut album 'The Color' was our CD of the month back in 2011) and it's great to see Sam Cohen keeping at it. The band released their sophomore album 'Songs from the Vanished Frontier' last week and it doesn't disappoint. Check out the video for 'Young Men of Promise' below, another video for 'The Ceiling' here, and/or stream the album on Spotify. You can see Yellowbirds live during their June residency at Rockwood Music Hall: they are on every Wednesday in June - starting on 06.05 (tomorrow).

Deli CD of the Month: Yellowbirds - The Color

Yellowbirds is the latest musical expedition, the “solo” debut, of Texas native Sam Cohen (guitarist/songwriter/vocalist in the psychedelic collective Apollo Sunshine). To Cohen, Texas was not the home of the Bush family or Big Oil, but rather the home to Buddy Holly and the Space Program. New York then, the city Cohen now calls home, is the epicenter of modern art, the home to Charles Mingus and the Velvet Underground. The music of Yellowbirds is full of double-speed auto-harp glissandos, bubbling echo and fuzz guitars played underneath the extistensial lyrics, a place where, as Cohen says, “only the purist tones can be heard.” Yellowbirds has released two singles, both in 2010, “The Rest Of My Life” and “The Honest Ocean” and “The Color,” both featured in his full-length album The Color, which came out in February 2011.
The music Cohen creates within the moniker Yellowbirds is, in three simple words, idealistic, dreamy and beautiful. - Leah Tribbett and Dave Cromwell
