Cold Beat Male Gaze and Mall Walk Open For The Soft Moon's Local Shows

The Soft Moon will be making a stop in the Bay Area on January 29th at The New Parish and January 31st at Slim's. Local bands Mall Walk and Cold Beat will be the supporting artists for the Oakland show and Male Gaze and DJ Omar Perez will be supporting the San Francisco gig with the Los Angeles based post industrial band, Sextile playing both nights. We love to see local bands earn great support opportunities like this!

The Soft Moon’s synthy, gothic album, Deeper is comprised of tracks that expose listeners to the dark imagery that wallpaper a stunning, manic mind. Deeper isn’t just your average dark, Bahaus-esque sound but replicates the kind of darkness that can only be heard miles from lights and civilization- the blackest of the black nights. With creepy, gorgeous layered beats, Deeper's tracks all have a similar sense of urgency equipped with quick stacatto beats. The haunting, distorted vocals layered with the foggy beats establish an anxious mood that you want to dance to. You’ll definitely want to come out to these shows as The Soft Moon will be performing his intense, dance floor-worthy remixes. Come out and dance into the darkness! -Lindsay Stickney

Sextile set to join Soft Moon for 2016 West Coast Tour

In a twist of events, Los Angeles' occult punks Sextile were recently hand-picked to tour parts of the West Coast with self-actualized Oakland-turned-Venetian EBM project The Soft Moon, following the dropout of headliner Killing Joke due to health reasons. Taking financial difficulties into account, Sextile launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for touring expenses —  the band has reached almost $1000, nearly 120% of their goal, with 13 more days to go. The support does not come unwarranted, either — since the release of their debut album A Thousand Hands, Sextile have made a name for themselves performing across Los Angeles with darker dance partners like The Electric West, L.A. Drones, and Terminal A. With expanding coverage from shore to shore, their purgatory sounds evoke perfectly the spiritual unrest and emotional agitation that scrapes the back of our thoughts.

In a recent interview with music blog Heathen Harvest, the band has announced that it will also perform at SXSW this year, and are currently writing new material for upcoming releases. Stream Sextile's debut album A Thousand Hands on Bandcamp and catch them at The Casbah in San Diego tonight. - Ryan Mo

Mr. Kitty Remixes Crystal Castles' "Frail," New Album Coming Soon

One of Austin’s best-kept secrets, Mr. Kitty has become the dark prince of self-destructive synthpop here in town. Having shared the stage with Crystal Castles and begun to establish a sizeable following outside of Austin as well, this goth-electro genius is destined to darken many doorsteps across the nation sometime soon. Providing dark lyrics with romantic themes and new wave synths floating over pulsating drum machines, Mr. Kitty hasn’t missed on any of the five full-length releases they’ve put out so far. Factor in a powerful live show, and some of you may be kicking yourself for having not found them sooner. Mr. Kitty will be releasing the (Rose Edition) of the album, Eternity, on Valentine’s Day, and here’s a recent remix of Crystal Castles’ “Frail” to get you in the mood.

Fit the Bill #1: Mini Blinds, Lisa Prank and Childbirth

It always nice to have a great, local act open up the bill for popular touring musicians coming through town. Sometimes, depending on the show booker, things can be hit or miss. Yet when they're a hit, they're truly a hit. A perfect scenario for the first of the Fit the Bill series would have to be Sunday night's show at Bunk Bar, where locals Mini Blinds opened up for Lisa Prank and Childbirth. Now of course, both Lisa Prank and Childbirth, playing together or separately, don't necessarily need aid in drawing a crowd. Bunk Bar hit capacity that night as fans of these two acts filled the roomed. They've both only played Portland once before so surely this was bound to happen, but Mini Blinds was definitely the right choice as an addition to the bill.

Mini Blinds is the dual effort of Beth Ann Dear and Devin Welch, who also happen to be 2/3 of other Portland favorites Appendixes. As the front woman in both efforts, Dear exudes a pleasant and angelic stage presence, much like the endearing tone of her voice. The chemistry between her and Welch during their performance was evident without being outwardly spoken, but expressed partially through coalescing movements about the stage. Though their entire set was great - the drum machines clean and crisp and her basslines and his guitar playing didn't skip a beat - the highest points were when Dear laid her bass down to devote all of herself to the vocals of their cover of "Angel Gone" by Beat Happening, as well as when her and Welch switched instruments for their last song, "Time Machine."

Overall, Mini Blinds were an exceptional choice for show, and truly fit the bill.

Help Love Cop replace their stolen property!

Gnar Tapes sweethearts of Portland, Love Cop, have been trudging through the recent blizzard for their Laid 2 Rest in the Midwest tour. Today, while having a look around Sun Studios before their show in Memphis, Tn, some dillweed broke into their van, stealing thousands in band merch and personal effects. Most of us have had things taken, it sucks, and no one likes it. Help these boys out. We're all starving artists, musicians and creatives, so we've got to have each others' backs. Anything helps and click the link to their Go Fund Me page HERE.
