Ghost King releases "Dunbar Swamp"

Way back in April of 2016, we picked Ghost King’s album “Bones” as our NYC Record of the Month. A lot of things have changed since 2016 (not just in the music world…) but we are still just as excited to hear new music from this band. Their new album, titled “Dunbar Swamp”, is a distillation of everything we love about Ghost King: the sludgy guitars bouncing between dissonance and melody, the ability to compensate dark moments with playful chords and lyric, the edgy but controlled psychedelic production. Ghost King proclaims this to be a “record about self discovery”, but it feels more like one of self actualization, one made by a band at the height of their powers. We hope they keep it up. Wine Lips - New Record 02.27 w/ North American Tour

Toronto based power trio Wine Lips are getting’ set to release their latest record “Stressor” on February 27th and have just dropped their second single. “Electric Lady” is a rippin’ garage track with ear worm hooks making a deadly combo of rock n’ roll. The video features singer/guitarist Cam Hillborn gettin’ all wine lipped and stumblin’ around the city. It’s definitely a tune that’ll make you wanna drink… Wine Lips are heading out on tour of Canada and the States finishing off with their hometown Release Party at the Horseshoe Tavern on April 5th with Pale Lips, Vypers and Fade Awaays. – Kris Gies

Slut Magic to play Planned Parenthood benefit concert at Trans-Pecos 02.14

With a name like Slut Magic, from the get-go it’s obvious this quartet makes no bones about being straightforward and political. “Slut” is such a loaded word, but for band founders Lauren Riucci and Emma Sky, it represents the assurance and indomitability that they want to reclaim through music. That music more than lives up to its aspirations; recalling the loud-soft-loud dynamics of grunge bands like Hole, Slut Magic knows how to balance every thrashing punk scream with moments of structural refinement (and vice versa). Slut Magic will play Trans-Pecos on Valentine’s Day, and will be donating all proceeds to Planned Parenthood - so if you’re looking to mosh for a cause this holiday, this might be the perfect opportunity. -Sunny Betz

White Rope celebrates new LP "NO FUNERAL" At Alphaville 01.31

Once upon a time, Morrissey sang “life is very long when you’re lonely,” and since then musicians from all walks of life in the world have scrambled to find similar catharsis in solitude and sadness. Brooklyn garage-punk band White Rope, echo that very lyric in their 2015 track "The Pain Olympics", but to a different end. The title of the track itself seems to parody the fervor with which a lot of artists mine their personal trials and traumas for lyrical content, but with a sense of humor (I mean, they do replace “lonely” with “horny”…). White Rope channels vulnerability in their own way, not shying away from real pain but also recognizing how goofy it can feel to put all that out there. White Rope celebrated the release of their new album NO FUNERAL (streaming) at Alphaville on January 31st, their next show is at Ceremony224 on April 2nd. - Sunny Betz

Weekend Warrior, February 1 - 3

In stark contrast to the frigid force that currently occupies the outdoors, the garage-surf quartet of Blushed creates an inviting, somewhat humid, melodic atmosphere – one that sinks into your skin like the breeze off the water as the temperature rises. There’s a tranquilizing yet combustible nature, reminding you that the mesmerizing glow of the candlelight is capable of causing serious damage at any moment. Tonight at the Music Ward, they’ll be joined by the garage-psych torrent of Line Leader. Welding emotively-laced lyrics and also exhibiting a carefree side, Canine 10 is enthusiastically engaging, while the tumultuous, jangly-emotive, surf-rock haze of Asbury Park trio Dentist completes this lineup.
