Don’t miss the new gnarly space rock EP from The Rupert Selection

Boston’s post-rock trio The Rupert Selection are one of the few bands in New England that can mash hard, progressive rock and ambient space noodles into a signature sound. Their newest EP Modern Playground Medicine, plays out like a soundtrack to a space-age action movie; it’s one part blistering, jagged rock and roll, one part ambient weirdness. The trio somehow manage to channel hard/space rock bands like Quicksand and Failure while simultaneously displaying their influence in the landscapes of Stanley Kubrick, ultimately showcasing an effortless comfortability within their own unique vision. Get sucked into the vacuum of Modern Playground Medicine below. -Charley Ruddell

New music from Porno Portal to Florida is as insane as you’d think

Porno Portal to Florida is a duo effort by guitarist/vocalist Joseph Luna and drummer/vocalist Joanna Almeida. The music of PPTF is a twisted conglomerate of thrash, post hardcore, prog metal, and DIY punk, where each song is an intense journey of aggressive musicality, and a steadfast commitment to personal discipline. Their newest release, the grimacing self-titled seven track EP, flies by in its initial run time, but has a whole lot of baggage to unpack. The hardcore duo have put out an exciting release of pure noise and controlled chaos that you can stream below. -Charley Ruddell

Crosswalk Anarchy release long awaited, mind bending new album “Composite”

Crosswalk Anarchy somehow manage to stuff all of their influences into their music. With elements of out-jazz, angular prog, vibey hip-hop grooves, and new age fusion, the five piece fuse their diverse compositions together with grace and precision. Their newest release, a full length album titled Composite, is a mind bending, genre hopping journey, chocked full of deeply jagged grooves (courtesy of composer Evan Waaramaa) and transcendent highs peaks (driven by talented vocalist Songyi Jeon). Stream the album below. -Charley Ruddell

A pre-NYE party with Ethereal Sea and more

It's pretty much a general consensus among everyone who paid attention to the excess of crap that happened this year that 2017 can't fuck right off. Seeing as New Year's Eve celebrations are a big deal in Portland there's plenty of opportunity to say that sayonara we all seek, but for New Year's Eve eve? There will be some "heavy music for heavy times," as advertised.

At the Kenton Club on 12.30, the purveyors of such heaviness range in their sonic density without fail, each elevating their sounds from a foundation of psych. Eugene's Sacred Trees involve hypnotic swirls of sound hazed by unrefined airs of lo-fi garage, while Robots of the Ancient World offer straight up stoner rock. Menin gets a little bit harsher will doom laden riffs, and Ethereal Sea embody facets of each, melding stoner, doom, psych and garage into a pretty powerful force.

Get the pregame started a night early.
