Have yet to see Surefire, Cavalier Rose or The States, but have heard nothing but good things - good songwriting, too. Still, though, I've seen The Shake, and they're really, really fucking good.
why no love for these guys in the comments? ive seen em play around the city a couple of times - they know how to bring the ruckus. they deserve to be on this list.
Hi, I work in A&R at Capitol Records and I was wondering if somebody could give me more information about signing The Shake to a record deal because thats what I'd like to do.
Thanks!
I'm a 12 year old girl and The Shakes music really speaks to me!!! I'm so glad they were chosen by music industry professionals as the best band in NYC!!
A couple of points: first, this category is "Alt Rock + Metal," not "Avant Indie" or something. Second, it's fairly obvious, to me at least, why this band won - the music's really fucking good. Just listen to the tracks on the myspace and you'll see that a band doesn't necessarily need eight synthesizers, a Nintendo, a mudslide of plate reverb and a forced sense of hipsterdom to deliver great songs.
Just because we live in NYC doesn't mean we're not allowed to appreciate (and like) really good Rock n Roll. -DFH
In the year 2010, I'm suprised that a band which such a generic sound (as tight as they may be) was able to win this contest. I think it reflects the current state of the music industry quite well though.
Sebastian Krueger's Inletswill please the hoards of music fans who have grown to love the floral and somewhat progressive folk championed by Grizzly Bear and Beach House. Less grandiose than the first and sunnier than the latter, Inlets' songs are instantly gratifying and more soothing. Their tamed vocals resonate in a very intimate way, like it often happens with one man/woman band projects, and the melodies are not as convoluted as you may expect. Krueger finds trendy help in the backing vocals department, where Dirty Projectors' Angel Deradoorian leads a team of beautiful voiced ladies whose subtle vocal counterpoint contributes in the texture and melodic departments. Acoustic guitars, clarinets, pianos, strings, percussion, the unmissable ukulele but also synths and other keyboard sounds contribute to the band's tastefully layered orchestrations. The album Inter Arbiter is due out in April - we predict that this record will be one of the soundtracks of hipster love this summer. - PDG
