Have yet to see Surefire, Cavalier Rose or The States, but have heard nothing but good things - good songwriting, too. Still, though, I've seen The Shake, and they're really, really fucking good.
why no love for these guys in the comments? ive seen em play around the city a couple of times - they know how to bring the ruckus. they deserve to be on this list.
Hi, I work in A&R at Capitol Records and I was wondering if somebody could give me more information about signing The Shake to a record deal because thats what I'd like to do.
Thanks!
I'm a 12 year old girl and The Shakes music really speaks to me!!! I'm so glad they were chosen by music industry professionals as the best band in NYC!!
A couple of points: first, this category is "Alt Rock + Metal," not "Avant Indie" or something. Second, it's fairly obvious, to me at least, why this band won - the music's really fucking good. Just listen to the tracks on the myspace and you'll see that a band doesn't necessarily need eight synthesizers, a Nintendo, a mudslide of plate reverb and a forced sense of hipsterdom to deliver great songs.
Just because we live in NYC doesn't mean we're not allowed to appreciate (and like) really good Rock n Roll. -DFH
In the year 2010, I'm suprised that a band which such a generic sound (as tight as they may be) was able to win this contest. I think it reflects the current state of the music industry quite well though.
Ah, the delights of The Deli's Open Blog! NYC duo Very Fresh posted an open blog entry here a few days ago - we checked out their songs and... we were impressed! "Marker", in particular, is a splendid song, very fresh sounding, slightly reminiscent of Liz Phair for the honest, fun delivery and the surprising melodic turns, but more chilled and intense - Phair's material was always so: "yeah whatever, this isn't really affecting me at all, dudes..."
This song shows a ton of potential and earns the band's EP "Americana" the Deli NYC's CD of the Month title. Amongst the other tracks we also like spare and dark "On Moot Point", while "The Clientele", which also displays a Barretesque love for unexpected melody twists, would benefit from better performances.
